The Sanjiangyuan area in northwest China's Qinghai Province is home to a thriving population of snow leopards. A recent survey conducted across approximately 360,000 square kilometers revealed that the population has reached about 1,002 individuals, exceeding global estimates by 10 percent.
This remarkable finding marks the first time China has completed a major snow leopard population assessment and represents the largest-scale survey of the species published globally. The survey also identified potential snow leopard habitats covering around 110,000 square kilometers in the region.
China is a crucial habitat for snow leopards, with approximately 60 percent of the world's population residing within its borders. The Sanjiangyuan area, with its high population density, plays a vital role in the conservation of this endangered species.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature estimates the global population of snow leopards to be between 7,446 and 7,996 individuals. The findings from the Sanjiangyuan survey highlight the importance of ongoing conservation efforts to protect this magnificent species.

Surveys are great, but what about action? Let's see stronger anti-poaching measures and habitat restoration.
