Beijing Calls for Better U.S.-China Relations Amidst Tensions Over Taiwan

In recent statements, Beijing has called on Washington to adopt a more accurate understanding of China and to cease its unwarranted attacks against the nation. This request comes after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, characterized China as the primary threat to the United States. During his confirmation hearing, Rubio asserted that the U.S. must demonstrate to China that there would be significant consequences for any aggressive actions towards Taiwan.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesman, Guo Jiakun, reiterated China's stance that Taiwan is an intrinsic part of China’s territory and that its status is a matter of domestic concern that should not be subjected to outside interference. He pointed out that the real danger to peace in the Taiwan Strait comes from the separatist movements advocating for "Taiwan independence," along with external forces that meddle in the situation.

Guo urged the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle and respect past agreements made in the three China-U.S. joint communiques, reinforcing the importance of honoring commitments to not support Taiwan's independence. He noted that the United States should stop backing those seeking Taiwan's independence and cease interference in China's internal matters regarding Taiwan.

He highlighted that the trajectory of China’s development is grounded in a clear historical context and driven by strong internal impetus, asserting that the primary goal is to enhance the quality of life for the Chinese populace while contributing meaningfully to the global community. Finally, Guo affirmed that China will continue to manage its international relations based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and cooperative endeavors, while firmly safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and developmental interests.
