Russia-Ukraine War

Ukrainian Fighter Expresses Despair and Hope Amid Ongoing Conflict

Stas, a 44-year-old former builder and current artillery specialist, enlisted in the Ukrainian army just days after Russia initiated its invasion in February 2022. Nearly three years later, he finds himself hoping that the new U.S. administration under Donald Trump can facilitate a swift resolution to the war. While expressing fatigue and desperation from the ongoing conflict, Stas articulates the collective exhaustion of both soldiers and civilians alike, who yearn for an end to the violence and the safety of their communities.

As the situation evolves, there is growing concern about the reality on the ground, particularly in the eastern region of Kharkiv around the city of Kupyansk. Although Ukrainian forces still control the city, recent incursions by Russian troops have increased anxiety among Stas and his unit, which is now facing dwindling numbers and ammunition stocks. He notices a decline in morale among his men, who are not professional soldiers but civilians turned fighters, now worn down by a protracted war that seems to be shifting in Russia's favor.

With Kupyansk being a vital transportation hub, its fate is crucial for the broader conflict in eastern Ukraine. After being liberated in September 2022, the city has remained a site of intense military activity, constantly under threat of renewed assaults. The ongoing devastation is evident on the streets, where infrastructure has been severely damaged, and residents are dwindling. Currently, only about 2,300 people remain in a city that once housed over 26,000.

Local officials, including Andrii Besedin, the military administrator of Kupyansk, express a desire to halt the violence, even if it necessitates freezing the current front lines. They highlight the grave dangers faced daily by the remaining inhabitants, as incessant artillery and drone attacks wreak havoc. Besedin recalls the traumatic experiences of those who endured Russian occupation, revealing that many citizens suffered severe torture and violence. The prospect of any part of Ukraine being ceded in a potential deal is met with strength by survivors who vividly remember the horrors of life under occupation.

Tetiana Vecher, a hospital director in Kupyansk, voices her opposition to ceding territory, highlighting the personal losses and tragedies she has witnessed throughout the war. With a heavy heart, she urges international leaders, including Trump, to understand the grave realities of the situation. Their experiences underline the widespread sentiment among Ukrainians that peace should not come at the cost of their sovereignty or territory.

Letting civilians fight instead of a professional army is a recipe for disaster. They deserve better than this!

Peace at any cost could lead to a worse future. We need to think critically rather than with just emotion.
