Appealing to Gen-Z
The UK's armed forces are facing a significant recruitment challenge, with declining troop numbers and a lack of appeal among Gen-Z. Research published in 2024 revealed that joining the military is the third most unappealing career prospect for young people, behind only McDonalds and KFC.
Shadow Defence Minister James Cartlidge believes that the military needs to better communicate its mission and career opportunities to potential recruits. He acknowledges that appealing to top applicants is difficult when the country is not actively engaged in war.
The Army has consistently failed to meet recruitment targets since outsourcing the task to Capita in 2012. Last year, the firm recruited just 63% of its target for the Army. The Ministry of Defence is currently seeking a new recruitment supplier.
Former RAF pilot and Defence Select Committee member Calvin Bailey believes that civilian organizations struggle to communicate the true impact and purpose of a military career. He emphasizes the need to explain how the military contributes to peace and national security.
Jack Cadman, a former captain in the Rifles Regiment, notes that young people today lack the context of combat operations that motivated his generation to join the military. He believes the military needs to shift its focus to highlighting purpose, service, and the opportunity to develop valuable skills.
Recent changes have relaxed medical eligibility rules, and Defence Secretary John Healey has vowed to speed up the recruitment process. However, the armed forces still face an uphill battle in attracting and retaining the next generation of talent.

Recruitment struggles reflect a lack of genuine interest in serving, not just poor marketing.

They are right; highlighting the meaningful impact military service has could attract more recruits. Let’s promote that!

Focusing on attracting recruits through job marketing undervalues the seriousness of military service.

What are they doing to improve working conditions? That would help recruitment more than just marketing.

The skills you develop in the armed forces are invaluable and highly sought after in civilian life. Glad they're addressing this!

The focus on skills development is misleading; many come out with little transferable experience.

You can't appeal to young people by pretending military service is glamorous when they've seen its brutal realities.
