From Industrial Wasteland to Beloved Beach
Carlyon Bay, a picturesque stretch of golden sand along the Cornish coast, boasts a fascinating history intertwined with the region's industrial past. While today it serves as a haven for relaxation and recreation, its existence is a testament to the transformative power of human intervention.
The story of Carlyon Bay begins in the 19th century, amidst the booming tin and china clay industries of Cornwall's Clay Country. Waste sediment from the mines, carried by the St Austell River, accumulated along the coastline, creating an unsightly and unusable landscape.
Crinnis, Shorthorn, and Polgaver.
As the china clay industry flourished, the shoreline expanded further, creating the vast expanse of sand we see today. The 20th century witnessed Carlyon Bay's transformation into a leisure destination. Beach huts and cafes emerged in the 1920s, followed by the Riviera Club in the 1930s, complete with tennis courts and an Olympic-sized swimming pool, attracting high society figures like Wallis Simpson.
The mid-20th century saw Carlyon Bay become synonymous with entertainment. The Cornwall Coliseum, built on the site of the Riviera Club, hosted legendary acts like The Clash, The Police, and Paul McCartney, solidifying its position as the heart of Cornish nightlife.
However, the very forces that created Carlyon Bay also posed challenges. Environmental regulations in the 1970s curtailed the disposal of sediment, halting the beach's artificial growth. Plans for luxury development faced opposition from locals concerned about access and sea defenses.
In recent years, the site has remained largely undeveloped, though the beach continues to be a popular summer destination. New proposals for sustainable development, including sand dune-style sea defenses, offer hope for the future of Carlyon Bay, ensuring its continued enjoyment for generations to come.

It's ironic that a beach created from waste became a place of leisure for the wealthy.
