A serious water supply disruption has impacted the community of Conwy in Wales, affecting around 40,000 residents due to a burst water main. Among those affected, about 5,000 individuals are considered vulnerable, leading to urgent measures as residents scramble to find drinking water. Reports from locals describe panic buying behavior, with one social media user likening the situation to a chaotic scene from a post-apocalyptic film. Many have even resorted to traveling long distances for bottled water or seeking out seawater for sanitation purposes.
The issue originates from a water treatment facility located in Dolgarrog, which prompted the closure of over 20 schools and various businesses in the area. Although the initial impact was widespread, the number of homes without water is believed to have decreased to around 8,000 as of today. Local Labour MP Claire Hughes expressed her concern over the incident, indicating that she would demand answers from Welsh Water regarding the rapid worsening of the situation, emphasizing a need for better crisis preparedness.
Welsh Water has acknowledged the complexity of the repairs, revealing that the burst main is located two-and-a-half meters beneath the riverbed, complicating restoration efforts. Once the pipe is repaired, water service might take up to 48 hours to be fully restored. Meanwhile, bottled water distribution centers have been established across the country, and officials have urged residents to conserve their remaining water supplies and look after those vulnerable in the community. Councillor Cheryl Carlisle has highlighted the dangers posed by the repair work, stressing that the situation remains critical and will not resolve immediately, especially as panic buying has depleted local store inventories of bottled water.
