China's Population Decline Continues in 2024
China's population has shrunk for the third year in a row, with the number of deaths exceeding births. This concerning trend is expected to worsen in the coming years, raising concerns about the future of the world's second-largest economy.
The National Bureau of Statistics reported a decrease of 1.39 million people in China's population, bringing the total to 1.408 billion in 2024, compared to 1.409 billion in 2023. This decline poses significant challenges, as a shrinking workforce and consumer base could hinder economic growth. Additionally, the rising costs of elderly care and retirement benefits will likely strain local governments already burdened with debt.
The decline in China's population is attributed to several factors, including the one-child policy implemented from 1980 to 2015 and rapid urbanization. As in neighboring Japan and South Korea, many Chinese people have migrated from rural areas to cities, where the cost of raising children is significantly higher.
While a temporary rebound in births occurred in 2024 due to a 12.4% increase in marriages delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, demographers predict a decline in births again in 2025. This ongoing population decrease presents a complex challenge for China, requiring innovative solutions to address the economic and social implications of a shrinking population.

This is just another reason why relying on China for everything is dangerous. We need to start diversifying our sources of production and creating our own sustainable economies.

This is just another example of China's disregard for the environment. The one-child policy was never about overpopulation, it was about controlling the population and keeping people from complaining.

Great news! We need fewer people on this planet anyways. Overpopulation is killing this planet and this will give it some much-needed breathing room.

This is a chance for us to finally achieve world peace. With fewer people and fewer resources to fight over, perhaps we can finally live in a world where everyone has enough.

This is just an excuse for the CCP to control our lives even more! They already force us to have one child and now they want to control marriage too? This is an attack on our freedom!

This is a chance to change the way things are done in China. The old ways of thinking are not sustainable, and this is an opportunity to adopt new, more sustainable practices.
