Nick Taylor, a Canadian golfer, has won his fifth PGA Tour title at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Taylor, who is ranked inside the top 30 in the world, is a consistent force on the PGA Tour and has been a major part of the golden group of Canadian golfers who have carried this country's torch for the past half-decade.
Taylor's latest triumph came after he knocked in a nifty pitch for eagle on the final hole of the tournament to get to 16-under 264. The dramatic hole-out came after he missed a four-foot putt on No. 15 and a three-footer on No. 16.
Taylor has won three playoff titles in a row, including the 2023 RBC Canadian Open with a 72-foot eagle that will go down in the annals of Canadian golf history. The last time anyone on the PGA Tour won titles in playoffs in three consecutive seasons was Bubba Watson in 2010-12.
Taylor has yet to come close to the finish line at major championships. Out of the seven full-time Canadian members of the PGA Tour, Taylor is the only one who has missed eight cuts in a row at majors.
Taylor says he is trying to get a little bit better and more comfortable in those situations. He points to Conners's consistency as something he "aspires" to have in his own career.
With Taylor's victory last February in Phoenix, it seemed like a foregone conclusion he would make both the Olympic team and the Presidents Cup team under captain Mike Weir at Royal Montreal. Although he made it to Paris, he ultimately fell short of earning a pick from Weir.
Still, Taylor has gotten off to as idyllic a start as possible in the early days of 2025. Conners, too, finished tied for fifth at the first event of the year. There is a half-dozen Canadian players – whose average age is firmly-in-your-golfing-prime 34 – who are all ready to follow in Weir's footsteps as a major winner.

“Taylor’s success feels like a product of luck and not true talent. His major record speaks for itself.”

“5 PGA titles, but can he even make the cut at a major? Seems more like a fluke than consistency.”

“Eagles are nice, but he needs to step it up in high-stakes situations if he wants to be remembered.”

“Sure, winning in Hawaii sounds glamorous, but does it really matter if he can't perform in majors?”

“Winning a few regular-season titles doesn’t mean you're a great golfer. Come back when he masters the majors.”
