Learner Tien, a 19-year-old American qualifier, etched his name in the history books of the Australian Open with a remarkable five-set victory over three-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev. The grueling encounter, which stretched for nearly five hours, concluded close to 3 am, leaving Tien both physically and emotionally drained.
In the post-match press conference, a ravenous Tien indulged in slices of pepperoni pizza, reflecting on the significance of his triumph. "It was either going to be celebratory or a binge eat … it feels better, it's more celebratory, for sure," he quipped to reporters.
Tien's victory was a testament to his resilience and determination. He had a 0-3 win-loss record at the majors before this week, and his only other five-set match at the tour level was a first-round encounter at Melbourne Park that lasted almost four hours.
Against Medvedev, Tien had the opportunity to win in straight sets but couldn't convert on a match point in the third. However, the missed opportunity didn't faze the laid-back Californian. "I mean, I didn't even touch a ball on that match point. It wasn't like I had a huge opportunity," he said.
Tien's win booked him a third-round date with Corentin Moutet, who defeated Australia's Alexei Popyrin earlier in the tournament. There may be more pizza on the menu if he triumphs over the Frenchman, and perhaps he will stick with the same toppings he enjoyed after ending Medvedev's campaign.
"Not too many pepperonis," Tien said with a chuckle, savoring the moment and looking forward to the next challenge.

This win doesn't change the fact that he's still relatively unknown and unproven.

All that pizza talk makes me lose respect. Focus on the sport, not your next meal.

I like his fighting spirit and determination. He never gives up.

This win was more about Medvedev's struggles than Tien's skills.

He should be more respectful to his opponent. Talking about missed opportunities is just rubbing it in.
