Special Ks' Reunion Cut Short by Injury
Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, the beloved "Special Ks," were forced to retire from their highly anticipated men's doubles reunion at the Australian Open due to injuries.
Both players entered the match at John Cain Arena carrying injuries that had hampered their singles campaigns. While Kyrgios received treatment for an abdominal strain during a break, it was Kokkinakis' pectoral injury that ultimately forced their withdrawal. The injury severely limited his ability to serve.
"The doctor advised me not to play," Kokkinakis explained after the match. "I can't serve, can't hit a high forehand. I'm in a lot of pain. But I wanted to come out here."
Despite the disappointment, Kokkinakis expressed his desire to play with Kyrgios again, even with his limited mobility. "I know there was a lot of talk about us playing again," he said. "I wanted to see if I was somewhat competitive, even without a serve. Just wanted to get on court again with the big fella."
Kyrgios, who had lost a marathon singles match the night before, echoed Kokkinakis' sentiment. "On full potential and full health, we could do some damage in the doubles," he said. "For me, obviously this year I've been out for a year and a half, two years, so I don't know what this year's going to bring."
While the duo admitted they haven't had any formal discussions about a future doubles career, their on-court chemistry and connection were undeniable. "We just have a good feel for the game of doubles together," Kyrgios said. "I'm sure we'll play together at some stage. But I can't guarantee that I'll be back here."
The Special Ks' exit leaves Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth as the only remaining Australians in the men's singles main draw. Vukic, who advanced to the third round for the first time in his Grand Slam career, will face Jack Draper on Friday night.
