Beijing Courts Enhance Accessibility for Livelihood-Related Legal Cases

Over the last year, courts in Beijing have intensified their efforts to address cases that are crucial for the well-being of citizens. A report presented during the city's people's congress showed that 49,930 labor disputes were resolved in 2023, resulting in the recovery of 890 million yuan (approximately $121 million) in compensation for the affected workers. This represents a notable increase from the roughly 41,000 such cases handled in the previous year.

Kou Fang, the president of the Beijing High People's Court, emphasized that the courts are adopting a people-centered approach to their operations. This strategy aims to enhance the quality of life for residents and improve their perception of access to justice. In 2024, the judiciary will further focus on cases that involve senior citizens and consumers, ensuring the protection of their health and property rights is prioritized.

Moreover, the report indicated that Beijing courts dealt with 454 cases related to personal information violations and instances of cyberbullying, which shows an increase of 149 cases compared to the prior year. Alongside addressing these pressing issues, the courts have introduced more convenient options for litigation and legal education. Notably, 606 law-awareness stations were established across the city in the previous year, facilitating a process where over 46 percent of cases can be filed online.
