In the aftermath of the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in the Xizang autonomous region, officials have begun providing transitional housing to those affected. Wei Jun, the deputy director of the region's emergency management department, reported at a press conference in Lhasa that a total of 13,000 prefabricated houses have been gathered, with more than 6,100 units already distributed and occupied. The ongoing transport of the remaining units is a priority for regional authorities.
The regional government is focused on the resettlement and safety of earthquake survivors, conducting detailed inspections to mitigate safety risks and protect property. Quick assessments of disaster impacts are being carried out to ensure community well-being as winter approaches. In response to challenges posed by the region's high altitude and cold temperatures, the earthquake relief headquarters has mobilized to swiftly deliver various relief materials.
Recent statistics indicate substantial donations, including thousands of electric stoves, blankets, cotton clothing, and significant amounts of fuel and food. Various departments have taken prompt action to evaluate safety risks, with geological hazard inspections revealing over 1,800 potential hazard points. Additionally, a comprehensive assessment of rural and public buildings has been conducted to identify further vulnerabilities.
Mobile fire inspections at resettlement sites have uncovered numerous fire hazards, many of which have already been addressed. Transport units have also undertaken inspections of infrastructure, while water resources departments monitored reservoirs for damage. In terms of recovery efforts, the PLA and police forces have successfully recovered cash and valuables, while public security agencies have salvaged thousands of items post-earthquake.
As a demonstration of support, the region's civil affairs department reported that over 1.64 billion yuan in donations has been collected from various sectors, comprising both monetary funds and material contributions. These efforts reflect a concerted response to the crisis as authorities work to ensure a safe and stable recovery for the impacted community.

13,000 prefabricated houses? That's not enough for the thousands affected by the earthquake. We need more!

Authorities need to be more transparent about the assessment of damages and the recovery plan.
