California Man Extradited to Face Sexual Assault Charges
A California resident, Ian Cleary, has been extradited to the United States to face charges of sexual assault stemming from a 2013 incident involving a Pennsylvania college student. Cleary was apprehended in France in April after a three-year search and has been held in custody pending extradition proceedings.
The accuser, Shannon Keeler, expressed relief at the news of Cleary's extradition, stating that it gives her renewed faith in the justice system. Keeler alleges that Cleary sexually assaulted her while she was a student at Gettysburg College. She reported the assault to authorities and provided evidence, but charges were not initially filed.
In 2021, Keeler discovered Facebook messages that appeared to be from Cleary's account, in which he admitted to the assault and apologized. This new evidence led to the issuance of an arrest warrant for Cleary.
Cleary is expected to appear in court in Pennsylvania to face the charges against him. Keeler's attorney, Andrea Levy, praised her client's courage and determination in pursuing justice. She also encouraged other survivors of sexual assault to seek help and legal assistance.
This case highlights the importance of survivors coming forward and reporting sexual assault, even if it takes time for justice to be served. It also underscores the need for law enforcement to take such allegations seriously and investigate them thoroughly.
