Violent Crime Declines in Biden's Final Year
The Department of Justice (DOJ) released its final nationwide crime statistics under the Biden administration, revealing a significant decrease in violent crime during the president's last year in office.
Following a pandemic-driven uptick in 2021, violent crime began to trend downward in 2023, with "double-digit drops in homicide rates across many major cities," according to the DOJ. This downward trend continued in 2024, with preliminary data from 85 major cities showing a 17.5% decrease in murder rates.
Overall, violent crime decreased by 10.3% between the second quarter of 2023 and the second quarter of 2024. The murder rate also saw a significant decline, dropping by 22.7% during the same period.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco attributed this progress to the department's Comprehensive Strategy for Reducing Violent Crime, launched in 2021. This data-driven strategy focused on deploying federal resources to support state and local law enforcement in addressing the most significant drivers of violent crime, including gun violence and repeat offenders.
The strategy also prioritized building trust in communities and investing in community-based prevention and intervention programs.
acting as a force multiplier with our state and local law enforcement partners — who are on the front lines of the fight against violent crime — and deploying technology and other cutting-edge tools to go after the individuals most responsible for crime in our communities."
While the report acknowledges that there is no single cause for the decline in violent crime, it emphasizes the crucial role played by law enforcement agencies at all levels.
"The work of law enforcement across the country — a partnership between federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies — has no doubt played a leading role," the report states.
This positive trend in violent crime reduction marks a significant accomplishment for the Biden administration as it concludes its term.

Statistics don't account for rising anxiety and concern over personal safety among citizens. The fear is very real!

This administration has focused too much on data and not enough on the root causes of violence.

The partnership between federal, state, and local agencies is essential. Great to see it yielding results!

What's the use of highlighting these numbers when people still fear for their safety daily? Data doesn't always tell the full story.

The report sounds like political spin. Has crime really declined, or is it just being reported differently?

These numbers are proof that efforts to prioritize community safety aren't just rhetoric—they lead to results!

Sure, violent crime went down, but serious issues like gun violence are still out of control in many places.

I'm glad to see the results of the Comprehensive Strategy in action! It’s encouraging to think that data-driven strategies are working!
