China's Cutting-Edge Cruise Missiles Showcase Advanced Defense Technologies at Airshow China

At the 15th Airshow China, held in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province, a remarkable array of cruise missiles has been unveiled, demonstrating the advancements in China's missile technology. Among the showcased missiles are the stealthy CM-98, developed by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited (CASIC), as well as the supersonic YJ-12E and the hybrid YJ-18E. This exhibition highlights two globally recognized defense-penetration technologies, underscoring the diverse capabilities that Chinese cruise missiles offer.

Cruise missiles are engineered for small size, extended range, high precision, and agility, which enable them to perform effectively in precision missions such as targeting enemy ships and executing air-to-ground assaults. These weapon systems can autonomously identify and engage vital targets, including airfields, bridges, and missile installations, often being at the forefront of military operations. Experts note that cruise missiles utilize two significant technological strategies to improve their defense penetration abilities; the first approach leverages supersonic speed to outpace enemy response systems, while the second focuses on stealth to elude detection by air defense networks.

CASIC presented two key anti-ship missiles at the airshow, highlighting the features of supersonic speed technology. The YJ-12E missile, characterized as an exceptional anti-ship weapon, stands out for its rapid pace and enhanced penetration capabilities compared to most subsonic missiles in international markets. With its ability to engage both naval and substantial ground targets from a distance, the YJ-12E integrates stealth, operational autonomy, and quick response, which are critical for effective long-range engagements.

Additionally, the YJ-18E missile employs a hybrid design that merges subsonic cruising with supersonic striking capabilities. This combination allows it to achieve long-range, stealthy strikes against various maritime and land targets. The YJ-18E's strengths lie in its extensive operational range, solid stealth features, and robust damage potential.

Mei Yabing, a spokesman for CASIC's Third Academy, emphasized that the CM-98 cruise missile exemplifies the latest in stealth technology, catering to international market needs for multipurpose operations. Designed to execute land strikes while maintaining a high degree of stealth and penetration, the CM-98 can engage high-value targets, including strategic installations. With capabilities for all-weather operations and resilience against countermeasures, the CM-98 aims to provide sophisticated solutions for the global defense landscape, showcasing CASIC’s strides toward weapon modernization and a thriving aerospace industry.

This is just fueling the military-industrial complex. When will we learn that more weapons do not equal safety?
