Chinese Foreign Ministry Addresses Respiratory Disease Inquiries Amid Rising Influenza Cases

In response to questions about respiratory diseases in China, Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated that the government prioritizes the timely release of transparent information about infectious diseases in accordance with legal requirements. He suggested that individuals seeking further details should consult the appropriate authorities in China.

The latest figures from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) reveal that the positivity rate for influenza viruses has been steadily increasing, with over 99% of cases being attributed to influenza A, mainly the A(H1N1)pdm09 subtype. Various health authorities across different regions have sent out urgent advisories, urging the public to adopt improved personal protective measures.

According to the China CDC, influenza has been the predominant pathogen detected among individuals suffering from respiratory diseases during the week from December 23 to December 29, 2024, impacting both outpatient and inpatient populations in northern and southern regions. While there has been a notable surge in cases in northern provinces, the influenza activity remains lower than the figures recorded during the same timeframe the previous year. In addition to influenza, rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) also feature prominently among circulating pathogens.

The CDC has observed a rise in HMPV-positive cases, particularly in the northern provinces, underscoring the virus’s commonality in causing acute respiratory infections. HMPV, like many respiratory viruses, spreads through droplets and contact, with its peak transmission occurring during the winter and spring months, especially in crowded settings such as schools and nursing homes. This virus poses a threat of repeated infections and is notably dangerous for children, leading to acute respiratory infections in those under five years old, as well as the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. The report highlighted that HMPV can result in severe lower respiratory tract infections, making monitoring and preventive measures all the more critical.

It's worrying that HMPV cases are increasing, especially since infections can be repeated. Are there specific vaccination or treatment options available?

The rise in influenza cases is concerning, but it's reassuring that the numbers are still below previous years.

Is China prepared to handle a potential surge in respiratory illnesses, given the burden already faced by hospitals?

The focus on prevention is important, and hopefully it can help reduce the impact of these diseases.
