A team of researchers from Nanjing Normal University in Jiangsu Province, East China, has recently made a significant discovery regarding the small Bryde's whale population near Weizhou Island in Beihai City. Their findings indicate that the number of these whales has surpassed 70, establishing this location as home to the largest coastal population of small Bryde's whales in the world.
The researchers detailed the physical characteristics of inshore Bryde's whales, noting that adults typically measure between 9 to 12 meters, with a maximum length not exceeding 14 meters. In contrast, the offshore variety of Bryde's whales is notably larger, with adult sizes ranging from 14 to 16 meters.
To determine the dimensions of the Bryde's whales in this region, the research team employed advanced modeling techniques, confirming that none of the whales measured over 14 meters in length. Additionally, genetic analysis was conducted using tissue and skeletal samples obtained from three Bryde's whales. This analysis established that the Bryde's whales around Weizhou Island belong to a subspecies of small inshore Bryde's whales, further highlighting the uniqueness of this population.
