A New, Larger, and More Venomous Funnel-Web Spider Discovered in Australia
Australian scientists have identified a new species of the deadly funnel-web spider, aptly nicknamed "Big Boy." This newly discovered species is larger and more venomous than its previously known relatives.
The research, published on Monday, revealed that there are actually three distinct species of Sydney funnel-web spiders, not just one. The newly identified species, named Atrax christenseni, measures an impressive 3.54 inches in length, significantly larger than the common Sydney funnel-web spider, which typically reaches around 2 inches.
"Our research uncovered hidden diversity among funnel-web spiders," lead researcher Stephanie Loria explained. "The Newcastle funnel-web, Atrax christenseni — 'Big Boy' — is a totally new species."
These dark, glossy spiders are considered among the most dangerous to humans due to their potent venom. Fortunately, the existing antivenom remains effective against bites from all three species, including "Big Boy."
While the venom of male Sydney funnel-web spiders can be fatal to adults, there have been no deaths since the introduction of the antivenom in the 1980s. Prior to that, 13 deaths were attributed to the common Sydney funnel-web spider between 1927 and the early 1980s.
In 2024, an individual Sydney funnel-web spider found in Australia set a record as the largest spider at the Australian Reptile Park, measuring 3.1 inches from foot to foot. This discovery highlights the remarkable diversity and potential dangers lurking within the world of spiders.
