Shinji Ishimaru Announces New Regional Party
Shinji Ishimaru, who surprised many by finishing second in last year's Tokyo gubernatorial race, announced on Wednesday the formation of a new regional party. The party, named "Saisei no Michi" ("The Path to Rebirth"), aims to field candidates in the upcoming Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election in July.
Ishimaru, the former mayor of Akitakata in Hiroshima Prefecture, explained that his decision to establish the party stemmed from his growing concern about the future of Japan. He believes that the country needs a new direction and that his party will focus on promoting public participation in politics, strengthening the autonomy of local municipalities, and fostering the revitalization of local communities.
"For a long time, I've had the feeling that things were getting bad in this country, and that we need to do something about it," Ishimaru said at a news conference in Tokyo. "This party is about taking action and creating a better future for Japan."
The announcement comes as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) faces increasing criticism over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues. The LDP is expected to face a tough challenge in the upcoming Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election, with several opposition parties also vying for seats.
Ishimaru's new party will add to the already crowded political landscape in Tokyo. It remains to be seen whether the party will be able to gain traction and win seats in the upcoming election. However, Ishimaru's strong performance in the gubernatorial race suggests that he has the potential to be a significant force in Tokyo politics.

Great to see someone addressing the issues instead of ignoring them. Count me in as a supporter!

Public participation sounds nice, but politicians always skew the narrative. Actions speak louder than words.
