France Faces Political Turmoil as Socialists Threaten No-Confidence Vote Over Pension Reform

The French Socialist Party, whose support François Bayrou's minority government has been desperately seeking for weeks, on Tuesday raised the specter of backing a no-confidence vote against the government later this week. This move could potentially topple the fragile government and plunge France into further political uncertainty.

The Socialists, who hold significant sway in the French parliament, have been at odds with Bayrou's government over the controversial 2023 pension reform. In December, they joined forces with far-right lawmakers to vote down previous budget proposals, leading to the fall of Michel Barnier's government. Now, they are demanding concessions on the pension reform as a condition for their support.

Earlier in the day, during a speech to Parliament, Bayrou attempted to appease the Socialists by opening the door to renegotiating the disputed pension reform. However, Socialist leader Jean-Christophe Faure declared that this was not enough.

"We will back a no-confidence vote, unless we get a clear response to our demands," Faure stated resolutely on the TF1 evening news bulletin on Tuesday.
