James Rodriguez, the Colombian captain, has joined Club Leon in Mexico's Liga MX. He arrives from Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga on a free transfer. Both teams confirmed the move on Monday.
According to local media reports, Rodriguez has signed a one-year contract with an option for another season. This marks his second stint in LaLiga after an impressive Copa America campaign where Colombia lost to Argentina in the final.
"Rayo Vallecano de Madrid and Club Leon of Mexico have reached an agreement for the transfer of James Rodriguez," Rayo Vallecano announced in a statement. However, they did not disclose any financial details of the deal.
"From the club, we wish James the best of luck in his new stage," the statement added.
The 33-year-old midfielder, who played for Real Madrid from 2014 to 2020, made only seven appearances for Rayo this season before his contract was terminated.
Club Leon, eight-time Mexican champions, welcomed Rodriguez with several images on their social media accounts, but also refrained from providing details of the transfer.

James should be ashamed of himself for taking this step backwards. 👎

Another disappointing move for James. Hopefully, he can find his form in Mexico, but I'm not optimistic. 😔

He's still only 33! James has plenty of time to prove his doubters wrong. 💪

Rayo clearly saw through James's limitations. 7 appearances? That's rough. 🥶

This move could be exactly what James needs to reignite his career. 🔥

Mexico is a competitive league, and James will have to fight for his place. That'll bring out the best in him. 💪

Not the comeback story we were hoping for. James is just making things worse for himself. 🤦♂️

This move shows James is hungry to play and doesn't care about the spotlight. ⚽️
