James Anderson, the renowned English cricketer, has decided to prolong his cricketing journey by inking a one-year deal with Lancashire, announced on Monday. At 42, he is eager to participate in the upcoming County Championship season and the T20 Blast, which marks his first entry into T20 since 2014, following his retirement from international cricket in July after appearing in his 188th test match.
Anderson holds the distinction of being England's all-time leading wicket-taker, with a remarkable total of 704 wickets over a 21-year career, making him the third-highest wicket-taker in Test history. He recently shared his enthusiasm for continuing his playing career during an appearance on the BBC's Tailenders podcast, stating his desire to compete for as long as he remains physically capable.
Though he has also taken on a role as a bowling consultant for England’s coaching staff post-retirement, Anderson emphasized that his primary focus for the summer will be on playing with Lancashire. He believes that it would not be fair to the team to only engage sporadically, hence his commitment to play consistently throughout the season.
Having made his first-class debut for Lancashire back in 2002, Anderson boasts an impressive record of 1,126 wickets across 298 first-class matches, including 376 for Lancashire alone. He expressed his determination to continue on the field following discussions with Lancashire about their plans for the future, concluding that it was an appealing opportunity for him.
Lancashire is set to begin their County Championship Division Two season against Middlesex at Lord's on April 4, with the T20 Blast kicking off on May 29 when they welcome Worcestershire.
