Harbin Gears Up for Asian Winter Games with Test Events
Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province in Northeast China, is in the final stages of preparation for the upcoming Asian Winter Games, scheduled to begin on February 7, 2025. The city is hosting a series of test events to ensure a smooth and successful Games.
The Yabuli Ski Resort recently hosted cross-country skiing competitions, featuring athletes from the local Heilongjiang team. These test events serve as a crucial rehearsal for the Games, allowing organizers to fine-tune timing, competition management, medical support, and media operations.
On January 12-13, the Heilongjiang Ice Events Training Centre Speed Skating Oval will host a speed skating test event with over 65 athletes competing in seven disciplines. Harbin is scheduled to host a total of 14 test events between October 2024 and January 2025, with seven events already completed, including figure skating and ice hockey.
Harbin, the only candidate city, won the bid to host the 2025 Asian Winter Games in 2023. The Games will follow the previous edition held in Sapporo, Japan, in 2017.
The competition schedule released by the organizers reveals that the Chinese team will make its debut in the mixed doubles' curling round robin on the morning of February 4, ahead of the opening ceremony on February 7. The night of February 4 will also feature a men's ice hockey match between China and South Korea.
The first gold medal of the Games will be awarded on the morning of February 8, with the highly anticipated short track speed skating events yielding gold medals on February 8 and 9. Short track is considered one of China's strongholds in winter sports, with the national team having won 12 gold medals across seven Winter Olympics. However, they will face a strong challenge from the South Korean team, which dominates the sport with 26 Olympic gold medals.
Harbin boasts a long-standing heritage in ice and snow sports due to its natural snowy conditions during the winter. This is not the first time Harbin has hosted the Asian Winter Games, having previously done so in 1996. The city is committed to delivering a successful and memorable event for athletes and spectators alike.

Are they really ready? There have been delays in preparations for other recent events.

Why bother with test events? They seem pointless if they don’t inspire confidence in the final outcomes.

Harbin might be cold and snowy, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good place for the Winter Games.

A major event in 2025? The budget for this could be much better spent on community projects.
