On Monday morning at 9:30 am, a memorial ceremony was conducted to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the recent earthquake that struck Chamco Township, one of the hardest-hit areas from the 6.8-magnitude quake in Dingri County, located in the Xizang Autonomous Region of Southwest China. The event saw the participation of numerous individuals, including soldiers from the People's Liberation Army, armed police, firefighters, public security officers, medical staff, young volunteers, enterprise employees, officials, and community representatives, all standing together in solemn silence for three minutes to honor their departed compatriots, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
The ceremony was particularly significant as it marked the seventh day following the earthquake, which occurred on January 7. The disaster claimed 126 lives and caused considerable damage, including the destruction of over 3,600 homes and impacting approximately 61,500 individuals across five counties, with numerous townships and villages affected. So far, rescue operations have successfully saved 407 people, and over 47,500 individuals have been relocated to safety. Relief efforts are being conducted systematically, with a strong emphasis on coordinating temporary and transitional housing to ensure comfort for those displaced during the harsh winter season.
