China Urges International Support for Syria Amid Ongoing Challenges

The current situation in Syria is precarious, necessitating robust assistance from the international community. Fu Cong, speaking at a UN Security Council Briefing, advocated for collective action to help Syria stabilize and develop while respecting its autonomy in determining its political future.

China endorses a political process directed by the Syrian people themselves, aligning with principles outlined in UN Council Resolution 2254. The representative stressed the importance of allowing the Syrian populace to shape their nation's future while emphasizing that a planned national dialogue, initially set for January 5, has now been postponed. He expressed hope that all involved parties would prioritize Syria's long-term interests and engage in an inclusive settlement process with increased support from the UN and Special Envoy, Geir Pedersen.

Despite the ongoing domestic challenges, Fu emphasized an unwavering stance against terrorism, urging all nations to combat designated terrorist organizations effectively. He voiced concern regarding reports of the Syrian army promoting foreign fighters from recognized terrorist groups, calling on Syria to uphold its counter-terrorism commitments to maintain regional security.

In terms of humanitarian issues, Fu highlighted the dire conditions faced by over 16 million Syrians, worsening due to enduring unilateral sanctions. He called for the UN to accelerate humanitarian efforts and ensure that aid reaches those in need as winter approaches while urging full compliance with international humanitarian laws from all parties involved in Syria.

Reaffirming China's long-standing approach of supporting Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, Fu stated that China remains committed to fostering collaborative efforts for Syria's peaceful development and transition going forward.
