The Ministry of Education has announced on Monday its plans to endorse the establishment of 14 new undergraduate higher education institutions, which includes one private university. The Fuyao University of Science and Technology, located in Fuzhou, Fujian province, stands out as the only private institution among those under consideration for approval.
Fuyao University was initiated with the backing of the Heren Charitable Foundation, which was established by the philanthropist Cao Dewang, and in collaboration with the government of Fuzhou. The foundation has committed an initial investment of 10 billion yuan (approximately $1.4 billion) to facilitate the launching of this university, which is set to concentrate on engineering and applied science disciplines.
The institution intends to introduce four undergraduate programs, including Materials Science and Engineering and Computer Science and Technology. According to the university’s president Wang Shuguo, during the annual gathering of the Fuyao Group, they are slated to commence student admissions in 2025. Additionally, other educational establishments pending approval include the University of Science and Technology in Beijing and the Jiuquan Vocational Technical College in Gansu province. The ministry's announcement also encourages public input until January 17.

Engineering and applied sciences don’t need another university; we need to improve the ones we already have.

10 billion yuan could be better spent improving existing public universities rather than creating new private ones.

Why are we investing in private universities when public ones are struggling for funding?

The focus seems to be on profit and business rather than genuine education. Disappointing!

Cao Dewang's investment doesn’t guarantee quality education. We need oversight!

Another private institution means more profit-driven education instead of accessible learning.
