President Xi Jinping Urges Law Societies to Play a Greater Role in China's Legal Construction

President Xi Jinping has emphasized the importance of law societies in advancing China's legal construction and modernization. In a letter to the ninth congress of the China Law Society, Xi encouraged law societies to contribute more to enriching legal research, supporting the practice of the rule of law, raising public legal awareness, and strengthening legal talent education.

Xi stressed the significance of upholding the Party's leadership and serving the broader goals of both the Party and the country. He called for law societies to break new ground in their work and for legal scholars and practitioners to consolidate confidence in the rule of law and devote themselves to comprehensively advancing law-based governance.

Chen Wenqing, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, echoed Xi's call for legal professionals to serve the people and conduct in-depth legal research. He emphasized the need for concrete efforts in ensuring sound legislation, strict law enforcement, impartial administration of justice, and society-wide adherence to the law.

Wang Chen, director of the China Law Society, delivered a work report at the congress, highlighting the contributions of exemplary groups and individuals in the law society system nationwide. Liu Guojie, an exemplary individual from the law society in Binzhou, Shandong province, expressed her commitment to fulfilling her duties and serving the people as a front-line legal practitioner.

Tao Kaiyuan, vice-president of the Supreme People's Court, emphasized the role of law societies as think tanks in deepening research of legal issues involving foreign affairs, especially in the international rule-making process for advanced technologies. She stressed the importance of integrating legal research with judicial practice and training legal talent in foreign-related rule of law.

Yang Dong, president of the Law School at Renmin University of China, highlighted the importance of international cooperation in legal research to enhance global understanding of China's legal system and boost confidence in the rule of law.

Law societies at all levels have actively participated in the formulation of important legislative items, organized lectures to enhance people's legal awareness, and hosted foreign-related legal seminars to serve high-level opening-up. These efforts demonstrate the commitment of law societies to playing a vital role in China's legal construction and modernization.

Liu Guojie's commitment to serving the people rings hollow given the lack of due process and human rights violations in China.
