On Sunday, the Royal Thai Police announced new safety initiatives designed to restore international trust in Thailand as a top travel destination. This decision comes in light of a growing number of incidents where foreign visitors have been victimized by scam operations that use Thailand as a route to Myanmar, raising serious concerns about tourist safety and the nation's overall image.
Pol. Gen. Prakhuab Wongsuk, who leads the newly formed Tourist Safety Operations Center (TSOC), emphasized the government's dedication to preventing crimes against foreign tourists. He stated that safeguarding the lives and property of visitors is paramount in maintaining Thailand's status as a dependable travel hub.
The TSOC will work closely with the Tourist Police Bureau under Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Phuek-am, as well as the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Their collaborative efforts will result in the implementation of security measures, including the recently introduced "Thailand Tourist Police" mobile application.
Launched on December 12, 2024, the app enables tourists to report messages, photos, and their location for assistance or emergency situations. It is linked to a 24/7 emergency center that provides services in eight languages while also coordinating with the established 191 emergency hotline for quick action.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira further highlighted plans for increased cooperation with foreign embassies situated in Thailand to ensure effective communication and swift emergency responses. They are also taking steps to disseminate accurate safety information through international channels to keep travelers informed.
Through these comprehensive measures, the Royal Thai Police aims to protect tourists and reaffirm the country’s reputation as a secure and inviting destination for travelers from around the world.
