China Submits Climate Action Reports to UN
China has submitted two reports to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), detailing its climate actions and progress. The reports, submitted at the end of 2024, include a biennial transparency report on climate change and a fourth biennial update report.
These reports cover a wide range of information, including China's national greenhouse gas inventory, progress in its nationally determined contribution, policy actions and their emission reduction effects, impacts of climate change and adaptation, and finance and technology needs and support.
The reports highlight China's significant progress in addressing climate change. China's carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP have decreased by more than 50% compared to 2005, and its forest stock has increased by over 6.49 billion cubic meters. As of 2023, non-fossil fuels accounted for 17.9% of China's total energy consumption, and by October 2024, the total installed capacity of wind and solar power in the country had reached 1.28 billion kilowatts.
The reports also assess the impact of climate change on China's natural ecosystems and social and economic development, as well as related losses and damages. China shares its policies and experiences in combating climate change in these reports.
The implementation of various targets is well on track, with goals for forest stock and total installed capacity of wind and solar power having been achieved ahead of schedule. These reports demonstrate China's commitment to addressing climate change and its leadership in global climate action.

This report focuses on national achievements, but ignores the global impact of their policies. They need to think beyond their borders and take responsibility for their emissions on a global scale.

Leadership in global climate action? I don't see it. This report reads more like a public relations exercise than a genuine commitment to change.

China's environmental policies are often opaque and lack transparency. More information and accountability are needed for us to believe these reports accurately reflect their true efforts.

Let's work together to support China and other countries in their efforts to build a more sustainable future for all.

Until China stops building new coal power plants and starts taking real action, these reports are just window dressing.
