On January 9, China Eastern Airlines announced that it has set up a new base in Harbin, located in northeastern Heilongjiang province. This move is part of the airline's broader strategy to contribute to the revitalization of Northeast China, particularly as the city prepares to host the 2025 Harbin Asian Winter Games beginning on February 7.
China Eastern has been operating in Harbin since 2003, having established a business branch in the area. Currently, the airline operates over 100 flights each day, connecting nine airports within Heilongjiang province to a total of 30 destinations both domestically and internationally. The carrier's vision includes transforming Harbin into a key international aviation hub, aiming to facilitate a comprehensive integration of the culture, aviation, and tourism sectors, thereby fostering significant growth in Heilongjiang's cultural and tourism industries.

Is China Eastern Airlines just using the Harbin Asian Winter Games as a way to push their agenda? It feels opportunistic.
