A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck southwest Mexico on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The tremor occurred near Coalcoman de Vazquez Pallares, a town of approximately 20,000 people located about 372 miles west of Mexico City. The quake had a depth of 53 miles.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on social media that the national emergency services had reported no new developments and were initiating review protocols in Coalcoman.
Mexico's location on five tectonic plates makes it highly susceptible to earthquakes, especially along the Pacific coast. In 1985, an 8.1-magnitude earthquake centered on the Pacific coast devastated much of central and southern Mexico, claiming thousands of lives and causing extensive damage in Mexico City.
A 7.1-magnitude earthquake on September 19, 2017, resulted in the deaths of 369 people, primarily in the capital.
On the same day in 2022, central Mexico experienced another earthquake, just hours after a nationwide earthquake safety drill. The 7.6-magnitude quake's effects extended as far north as 1,500 miles, where four-foot-tall waves were observed churning inside a Death Valley cave known as Devils Hole.

The response to the last big earthquake was slow and disorganized. I doubt things will be any different this time.

It’s sobering to think about our earthquake history, but I believe we’re learning and improving every time.

Another earthquake? When will the government invest in better infrastructure instead of wasting money elsewhere?
