On a recent episode of "Face the Nation," FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell acknowledged that officials in Los Angeles had taken substantial measures to prepare for wildfires, a common issue in the area. However, she mentioned the unusual intensity of the fires this time, driven by winds reaching 100 miles per hour, which significantly complicates containment efforts in the critical initial stages.
Recent wildfires in Los Angeles have had a catastrophic impact, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals and the destruction of over 12,000 structures, leaving many displaced. Criswell warned that the strong winds fueling the fires might return this week, urging residents to heed advice from local authorities to ensure their safety.
When discussing recovery, Criswell raised concerns about insurance, pointing out that many California residents had lost their coverage prior to the fires. She stressed that insurance is essential for families to aid in the reconstruction process. While FEMA has programs designed to assist in recovery, such as grants with maximum amounts under $44,000, she acknowledged this might not be sufficient for rebuilding homes. Partnerships with organizations like the Small Business Administration are also in place to help provide low-interest loans.
Criswell emphasized the importance of not only where homes are rebuilt but how they are rebuilt, advocating for fire-resistant designs to enhance community resilience. Her commitment extends to working with the governor's administration to ensure rebuilding efforts support long-term sustainability and to keep insurance options available for affected families.
To foster more resilient communities, Criswell suggested the underground placement of power lines, which could mitigate wildfire risks and improve power reliability during severe weather. She refrained from providing a total estimate of damages as the fires continue, but mentioned that Congress has several programs in place that could assist in the recovery process, offering a range of tools and resources for the affected communities.

If they know wildfires are a problem, why haven’t they made better preparations?
