Taylor's monthly rent amounts to $620, a significantly lower cost compared to his previous apartments. He opted for an unfurnished unit, allowing him to personalize the space with furniture that reflects his eclectic taste.

His decision to rent stems from valuable lessons learned during his time in Malaysia. He recalls his first apartment, situated on the 35th floor, which quickly lost its appeal when a building was constructed directly in front of it, obstructing the view. This experience solidified his preference for renting, offering greater flexibility and ease of movement.

Taylor's story resonates with many Americans facing the harsh reality of rising living costs and an impending retirement crisis. Analyses indicate that a comfortable life in major US cities requires an annual income of $96,000, pushing many towards early retirement abroad.

In contrast, the MM2H visa has made Malaysia a haven for expats seeking a more affordable and relaxed lifestyle. As of January 2024, over 56,000 active MM2H pass holders resided in the country, with Chinese nationals forming the majority.

Taylor's life in Malaysia mirrors his lifestyle in the US, with the added benefit of a lower cost of living. He estimates his monthly expenses to be around $2,500, a sum that wouldn't sustain him in the US.

Beyond the financial advantages, Taylor feels a sense of security in Malaysia. He highlights the stark contrast to his previous neighborhood in D.C., where gunshots were a frequent occurrence. In Malaysia, he feels safe and comfortable even when walking alone.
