Musk's Role and Potential Conflicts of Interest
With President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration just days away, new details have emerged about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the forthcoming commission that Tesla CEO Elon Musk will co-lead alongside businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.
According to The New York Times, some DOGE staffers, including potentially Musk, could be classified as "special government employees" (SGEs). SGEs are temporary workers who can be paid or unpaid and can be employed by the federal government for a maximum of 130 days within a 365-day period.
The SGE designation is significant because it subjects these individuals to less stringent conflict of interest rules compared to regular federal employees. This has raised concerns among government watchdogs and some Democratic politicians, who question how Musk can handle such a role given his potential conflicts of interest involving his companies SpaceX, Tesla, and X.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts sent a letter to Trump's transition team expressing her concerns, stating that putting Musk in a position to influence billions of dollars in government contracts and regulatory enforcement without a stringent conflict of interest agreement is "an invitation for corruption on a scale not seen in our lifetimes."
Musk has been a vocal supporter of Trump, spending over $250 million in 2024 to help send him back to the White House and aid other GOP candidates.
Business Insider reached out to Trump's transition team for comment, but no response has been received as of yet.

This just shows that the rich can manipulate the system to benefit themselves while ordinary citizens pay the price.
