A looter disguised as a firefighter was arrested in Malibu, California, during the devastating wildfires that ravaged the Los Angeles area in January 2018. The man was one of over two dozen people apprehended as the fires raged, displacing thousands of residents and causing widespread destruction.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna described the incident, stating that his deputies encountered the suspect in the Palisades Fire evacuation zone. Initially mistaking him for a genuine firefighter, Luna approached the individual only to discover he was not affiliated with any fire department. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the man had been burglarizing a home in the area.
The suspect, who remains unidentified, faces additional charges for impersonating a firefighter, a crime punishable by up to a year in jail. Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell condemned the act, emphasizing the severity of exploiting victims during such a tragic event.
The wildfires, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, caused widespread devastation across multiple communities in Los Angeles. Over 100,000 people were forced to evacuate, and the death toll reached at least 16, with many more unaccounted for. The fires destroyed over 12,000 structures, including hundreds of homes, leaving a path of destruction in their wake.
