In Johor, the recent flooding situation has escalated, with more than 3,000 people reported to be affected as of the morning of January 12. This marks an increase from the previous count of 2,524 individuals. According to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), the 3,295 individuals impacted represent 960 families from various districts, including Kota Tinggi, Kulai, Johor Bahru, Kluang, and Pontian. To accommodate those displaced, 34 temporary evacuation centres have been set up.
Kota Tinggi has been identified as the district with the most significant number of flood victims, totaling 1,160 individuals. Other affected areas include Kulai with 748 victims, Johor Bahru with 502, Kluang with 455, and Pontian with 430. The Malaysian Meteorological Department has issued warnings of continued heavy rain, which could lead to flooding in additional districts, such as Batu Pahat and Mersing.
Earlier reports also highlighted the risky conditions resulting from the flooding, including an incident where a man was rescued after his vehicle was swept away in Jalan Liku Cina. The police chief of Kota Tinggi, Yusof Othman, shared that the man was trapped on top of his car, which had become lodged against an electric pole during the rescue efforts. Flooding is a recurring issue in Malaysia's eastern coastal regions during the annual monsoon, typically lasting from October to March, leading to significant displacement each year.
