Tram Collision in Strasbourg Injures Dozens, Cause Under Investigation

Tram Collision in Strasbourg Injures Dozens

A rare accident occurred in Strasbourg, France, on Saturday, January 11th, when two trams collided in a tunnel near the city's main train station. The collision resulted in dozens of injuries, with estimates ranging from 36 to 50 people affected.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Videos circulating on social media show the aftermath of the collision, with both trams significantly damaged. One tram appears to have derailed due to the impact.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, setting up a large security perimeter and providing medical assistance to the injured. Paramedics and firefighters transported those requiring immediate attention to ambulances, while others received first aid under the station's glass roof.

Strasbourg Mayor Jeanne Barseghian expressed her support for those affected and confirmed that there were no fatalities. She described the impact as "relatively violent" and noted that some passengers were in a state of shock.

Patrick Maciejewski, chairman of the Strasbourg transport company (CTS), mentioned that demonstrations in the city center had disrupted tram traffic earlier in the day, leading to traffic congestion and the need to reorganize tram routes.

Rene Cellier, director of the Bas-Rhin fire and rescue service, reported that around 50 people sustained non-fatal injuries, including scalp wounds, clavicle fractures, and knee sprains. Additionally, approximately 100 people were assessed by medical professionals despite not exhibiting specific injuries.

A witness named Johan claimed that one of the trams reversed at full speed before the collision, suggesting a potential brake issue.

Experts have emphasized the rarity of such incidents, highlighting that trams remain a safe mode of transportation, especially considering their relatively low speeds within city centers. However, the location of the accident, within a tunnel and near a busy train station, has raised concerns about potential safety risks.

This incident marks the second tram collision in Strasbourg's history, following a similar accident in 1998 that injured 17 people. The city, known for its historic significance and role as the official seat of the European Parliament, continues to grapple with the aftermath of this unfortunate event.

Strasbourg has a great public transport system. One incident shouldn't overshadow its overall safety.
