As wildfires rage in Los Angeles, a petition on Change.org calling for Mayor Karen Bass's resignation has gained more than 92,000 supporters as of Sunday morning. The petition, initiated by someone identifying themselves as "Frustrated Californian," criticizes Bass for what they describe as "gross mismanagement" of the ongoing disaster, particularly noting her absence from the city while the fires broke out, as she was in Ghana last week.
Critics have highlighted the severe strain on water supplies, the alleged misallocation of taxpayer funds, and the tragic loss of lives due to the wildfires. The petition further indicates a growing dissatisfaction among Angelenos regarding the mayor's ability to effectively manage the crisis, especially since multiple wildfires are currently active in the county, including the Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth, Hurst, and Archer areas.
Upon her return, Bass has communicated with Angelenos through social media, expressing her sympathy for those affected and acknowledging the widespread devastation. In a video message, she conveyed her determination to help the city navigate through this difficult period.
In defense of Bass, Zach Seidl, the deputy mayor of communications, stated that she is actively managing one of the most challenging crises in the city’s history. He emphasized the role of natural forces, such as hurricane-force winds and extremely dry conditions, in exacerbating the wildfires, and he pointed out that the mayor had worked to secure various resources for fighting the fires and aiding recovery efforts.
Despite her previous high regard from prominent Democratic leaders, including President Biden and former President Obama, Bass now faces significant scrutiny and criticism. Public figures, such as podcast host Aurora Culpo and various celebrities, have called out government officials for a lack of preparedness and accountability during the crisis, urging them to resign.

She may have been out of the city, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t working to help our community.

This isn’t just about wildfires; it's about trust and accountability. Bass has failed on both fronts.

The state of emergency should have been her priority. If she can’t handle that, she should resign!

We should appreciate the temporary setbacks; she will learn from this experience and grow stronger.

Let’s focus on rebuilding and recovery rather than pointing fingers. We’re all in this together!

How can a mayor be absent during such a critical disaster? This is a clear failure of leadership!

Natural disasters are unpredictable. Let’s focus on supporting our leaders instead of tearing them down!
