President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom with distinction, the nation's highest civilian honor, to Pope Francis on Saturday. The medal was originally scheduled to be presented in person in Rome during what was to be Biden's final overseas trip of his presidency. However, Biden canceled his travel plans to monitor the wildfires in California. Instead, he bestowed the award on the pope during a phone call in which they also discussed efforts to promote peace and alleviate suffering around the world.
The White House announcement described Pope Francis as "unlike any who came before," highlighting his role as the "People's Pope" and a beacon of "faith, hope, and love." This marked the first time during Biden's four years in office that he awarded the medal "with distinction."
Both Biden and Francis have faced challenges during their respective tenures. Massimo Faggioli, an Italian academic and professor at Villanova University, noted the difficulties both men have encountered in recent years. He emphasized the tragic nature of these times, stating that "what could go wrong did go wrong in these few years."
Pope Francis, who has led the Catholic Church since 2013, has advocated for openness to the modern world. However, his support for abortion and other positions that contradict Church teachings have drawn criticism from some U.S. Catholics.

Let's not forget those who suffer due to the Church's stance on social issues. This award makes a mockery of all those victims.

Is this a joke? How can Biden award the top honor to a religious leader who doesn't even follow church teachings? Ridiculous!

I lost respect for Biden with this decision. Honoring religious leaders who preach division instead of unity sends a dangerous message.

Lost any remaining trust I had in the Biden administration. This award serves as a reminder of their willingness to sacrifice moral standards for political gains.

This action further divides American Catholics. Why is Biden pushing his liberal agenda instead of uniting our nation under common values?
