On Saturday afternoon, a serious incident took place at a major tram station in Strasbourg, France, where two trams collided, leaving many individuals injured. Eyewitness footage shared on social media depicted chaotic scenes, with numerous people seen on the ground and alarms sounding in the background. Local media outlets, such as Actu17, reported that approximately 30 persons sustained injuries during the accident, with five individuals reportedly in critical condition.
Preliminary investigations indicate that one tram changed tracks unexpectedly, resulting in a collision with another tram that was stationary. Following the incident, the Bas-Rhin national police confirmed via social media that tram services were halted in both directions at Strasbourg station. The Bas-Rhin fire and rescue service also noted that a significant number of emergency resources were dispatched to the scene, advising the public to avoid certain areas to allow for emergency access.
Emergency services cordoned off parts of the station, which resulted in four bus routes being interrupted as per live travel updates. City councillor Pierre Jakubowicz expressed his concern for those injured, stating his support for the emergency personnel involved. Strasbourg is recognized not only for its unique blend of French and German cultures but also for its stunning architecture and significance as a European political center.
