Reform UK has voiced strong opposition to the county councils that are seeking to postpone local elections, denouncing the move as an act of sheer cowardice. The party's chairman, Zia Yusuf, indicated that they are exploring legal avenues to challenge the councils, which constitute over half of the local authorities intending to request election delays from the government. Yusuf proclaimed that although councils may try to evade their responsibilities, the voter backlash would ultimately be unavoidable when elections eventually take place.
With new devolution plans introduced last month aimed at restructuring local governance, Labour has proposed reducing the number of councils in England and establishing a mayor for each region. The government has mandated that areas express interest in these plans, with a deadline set for January 10, coinciding with requests to postpone local elections. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, criticized the county councils, claiming they are capitulating to Labour's aggressive reforms to local governance, which he argues have not undergone any public discussion. He believes that such actions are motivated by a desire to maintain their positions and incomes.
Several county councils—including Devon, Essex, and Surrey—are considering these postponement requests, with a potential delay lasting more than a year. Farage expressed his discontent over the situation, stating there is no justification for canceling the elections, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes. He reflected on the gathering of party members awaiting his speech at the Reform South-East conference, expressing frustration that the party’s plans leading up to the elections are now affected by the councils' postponement requests.
Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has revealed intentions to consolidate smaller district councils into larger county councils, thereby streamlining local governance. Yusuf pointed out that the upcoming elections would have seen over 2,200 council seats contested, of which around 1,500 were held by the Conservative Party. He condemned the behavior of councils attempting to delay elections, arguing that it undermines democracy and likening such actions to those of dictators. He pointed out the irony of Labour members criticizing Reform UK while themselves aiming to postpone democratic elections.

This is an insult to the voters. The people have the right to choose their representatives, and these councils are trying to take that away from them.

This is a blatant attempt to silence the opposition. Reform UK is a threat to the establishment, and these councils are trying to shut them down.

I'm disgusted by Reform UK's hypocrisy. They claim to be champions of democracy, but they're trying to undermine it at every turn.
