Attack on Hosei University Lecture Hall Leaves Eight Students Injured

On January 10, Hosei University in Tokyo's Tama Campus became the scene of a sudden and shocking attack as a student armed with a hammer indiscriminately assaulted his classmates in a lecture hall. The incident left eight students injured, though fortunately, none suffered life-threatening injuries. The suspect, a 22-year-old South Korean student, was apprehended without further incident on campus.

Witnesses recalled the terrifying atmosphere that unfolded during the lecture. A 20-year-old female student reported that screams erupted just before 4 p.m., shattering the normalcy of the classroom. She turned to discover students fleeing in panic, with one classmate bleeding heavily from her head. In her shock, she ran towards the front, only to see the assailant swinging the 30-centimeter hammer. Her harrowing experience left her shaken, realizing that such violence could take place in an academic setting.

Another student situated further back in the hall initially mistook the sounds of the attack for a typical altercation. However, when he looked back, he found the attacker striking fellow students on the head with the hammer. This incident profoundly affected him, shattering his previously held belief that such events are solely depicted in media and could never reach his own environment.

A third-year male student also reported that the perpetrator appeared emotionless as she escalated her violent actions, even after dropping the hammer. She continued her assault with bare hands and threw her phone onto the floor, which amplified the sense of danger felt by those present. Meanwhile, a fourth-year student located nearby learned about the chaos through a friend's message and was horrified to realize that something so brutal had occurred on his university campus. He witnessed the emergency services responding, further highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
