Kerala Government Promises Swift Action in Shocking Sexual Abuse Case of Teenage Girl

KV Thomas, the Special Representative of the Kerala Government, has emphasized the robust and transparent nature of the state's judicial system in response to a serious sexual abuse case involving a teenage girl. He stated that the authorities are committed to taking swift action, highlighting that the judicial system operates independently and efficiently when cases are presented. Thomas mentioned the proactive role of child welfare councils at various educational levels, which are active in reaching out to victims, gathering their complaints, and ensuring that legal proceedings follow appropriately.

In response to the incident, Rekha Sharma, the former Chief of the National Commission of Women and a current Rajya Sabha MP, expressed her shock regarding the ongoing abuse that reportedly began when the girl was as young as 13. Sharma called for urgent action from the Kerala police, demanding that all perpetrators, regardless of their connections, be arrested. She questioned whether the offenders were family members or individuals of influence, urging the state’s Director General of Police to prioritize the case and ensure that the victim receives necessary counseling.

Congress leader Udit Raj also voiced his disbelief over the sexual abuse case, particularly given Kerala's reputation for educational advancement. He noted that the incidence of such crimes is often lower in educated states like Kerala compared to northern regions, making this case particularly troubling. Raj called for a detailed investigation and legislative measures to ensure those guilty of the crime face appropriate punishments. On January 11, the National Commission for Women called for urgent and fair investigations into the reports of the girl being abused by 64 individuals over four years in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.
