Herrmann Battles Headsail Problem as Race Nears Finish
German sailor Boris Herrmann, currently in seventh place in the grueling Vendee Globe solo race, faces a critical challenge as the competition nears its conclusion. A broken hook on his J2 headsail, crucial for over 70% of the remaining route, has left the sail unusable.
"If the Vendee Globe was easy, many people would do it." This latest issue follows a difficult week where he climbed the mast to repair damage caused by a lightning strike.
The problem arose when Herrmann awoke to the sound of flapping sails. Upon investigation, he discovered the J2 partially lowered and the halyard damaged. While the mast remains intact, Herrmann faces the daunting task of climbing it again to attempt a repair.
Working with his land-based team, Herrmann expects to lose valuable time and distance to his rivals. "The battle will be on to keep 10th place until the finish," he stated.
The Vendee Globe, often dubbed the "Everest of the Seas," is one of the world's toughest solo sailing competitions. The race, which began on November 10th, is nearing its climax, with leaders expected to cross the finish line in Les Sables-d'Olonne, France around January 14th.
This year's edition has already witnessed several milestones. Yoann Richomme, aboard PAPREC ARKEA, set a new 24-hour solo monohull distance record on November 25th, covering 579.86 nautical miles. He also broke the Cape Horn record, reaching it in 43 days, 11 hours, 25 minutes, and 20 seconds, surpassing Armel Le Cleac'h's 2016 mark.
Currently leading the fleet is Frenchman Charlie Dalin aboard MACIF Sante Prevoyance, with 1,479.93 nautical miles to the finish. Compatriot Richomme trails by 190.66 NM in second place, while another Frenchman, Sebastien Simon, aboard Groupe Dubreuil, holds third, 840.99 NM back.
Herrmann, despite the setback, remains determined and currently sits in seventh, 2,711.37 NM behind Dalin. The battle for the top positions continues as the Vendee Globe reaches its thrilling conclusion.

This race is brutal; I admire how Herrmann keeps pushing through adversity.

Everyone else is making progress, and he's just sitting there with broken gear. Disappointing.

Climbing the mast again? I mean, how many chances does one racer get? He's clearly not ready for this level.
