On New Year’s Day, a tragic incident occurred in New Orleans where a truck attack, inspired by the Islamic State group, resulted in the death of 14 individuals. The assailant, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, fired at police from within his truck before officers returned fire, as captured in a recently released police bodycam video.
The footage, shared with the media by the New Orleans Police Department, shows Jabbar shooting from behind an airbag while surrounded by several police officers following the crash of his truck into a crowd of people celebrating on Bourbon Street. During a news conference, police officials disclosed that three officers fired their weapons during the confrontation but refrained from revealing the number of shots Jabbar discharged, citing an ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.
In the dramatic bodycam video, an officer standing next to Jabbar’s truck door can be seen raising his gun, just moments before a muzzle flash is observed from inside the vehicle. As gunfire erupts, several officers instinctively take cover on the ground while returning fire at Jabbar, who was armed and firing at them from close range. Ultimately, two officers near the driver's door and another officer positioned in front of the truck engaged Jabbar in a dangerous exchange of gunfire.
