In May 2023, Sachit Mehra was elected as the president of the federal Liberal Party during a national convention in Ottawa. During his victory speech, he made a light-hearted promise to his mother, stating, "I promise I’ll be back at the restaurant soon," indicating the importance of his food service background. Mehra currently oversees the Winnipeg branch of the East India Company, a family-run restaurant chain established by his parents in the 1970s.
Having been involved in politics for three decades, Mehra has a deep commitment to the Liberal Party, previously serving as president of its Manitoba branch and a member of the Young Liberals of Manitoba. His political journey has positioned him at the forefront of discussions concerning the succession of Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader, especially with a national election anticipated in the spring. Following Trudeau’s announcement regarding his departure, Mehra took charge of convening the party's 34-member national board of directors to formulate a strategy.
The party recently laid out the procedures for the leadership race, which includes a hefty $350,000 entry fee as well as stipulations concerning voter eligibility and a timeline for electing a new leader by March 9. This date is critical, as it precedes the return of the House of Commons on March 24, when the opposition aims to trigger a confidence vote to potentially unseat the Liberal government, thrusting the incoming leader into an election campaign almost immediately.
In his role as president, Mehra is second in command after Mr. Trudeau, responsible for chairing meetings and overseeing the party's operations. He has actively participated in various community initiatives in Winnipeg, such as serving as the community relations chair for the 2016 Canada Summer Games and leading the Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone.
Throughout his campaign for the presidency, Mehra emphasized his grassroots connection to the party, aiming to enhance volunteer engagement and balance campaigning efforts across electoral districts. He garnered support from notable figures within the party, including Seamus O’Regan and Mélanie Joly, and was recognized for his progressive stance and grassroots ties. Ultimately, Mehra won the leadership race against Mira Ahmad, a former Young Liberals leader, and expressed his commitment to working toward a Liberal majority while fostering unity within the party. As president, he now plays a vital role alongside a diverse board comprising representatives from across Canada and Indigenous Peoples' co-chairs. However, details of his immediate plans remain under wraps, as he was unavailable for an interview.

His ties to the Young Liberals are concerning. They're all about identity politics, not real issues.

I'm tired of career politicians. We need someone who understands the struggles of everyday people.

Mehra's leadership race was all about money and connections. That's not the kind of leadership we need.

Trudeau's stepping down? Now's the time for a real change, not another Liberal clone.
