Beijing's Air Quality Improves Significantly in 2024

Beijing saw a remarkable improvement in air quality in 2024, with 290 days classified as having good air quality. This represents the highest number of good air quality days since monitoring began, marking a significant improvement over previous years.

The proportion of days with good air quality in the capital reached 79.2%, an increase of 19 days compared to 2023 and a staggering 114 days compared to 2013. This positive trend is further evidenced by the dramatic decrease in days with heavy air pollution. In 2013, Beijing experienced 58 days of heavy air pollution, a number that plummeted to just two days in 2024, representing a 96.6% reduction.

The average concentration of PM2.5, a key indicator of air pollution, reached 30.5 micrograms per cubic meter in 2024. This meets the national standards for four consecutive years, demonstrating sustained progress in air quality improvement. Compared to 2013, the annual average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide in Beijing decreased by 65.9%, 50%, 57.1%, and 88.7%, respectively.

These improvements are attributed to various factors, including stricter environmental regulations, the closure of polluting factories, and the promotion of clean energy sources. The positive impact on public health and the environment is undeniable, making Beijing a more livable city for its residents.
