Shanghai Welcomes Foreign-Owned Hospitals
Shanghai is opening its doors to wholly foreign-owned hospitals in key economic zones, biopharmaceutical clusters, and expat-heavy districts. This move aims to boost healthcare diversity, attract foreign investment, and improve medical services.
Foreign investors must demonstrate advanced management practices and provide cutting-edge technology. Approved hospitals will be tertiary institutions, excluding those specializing in specific areas like psychiatry or traditional Chinese medicine.
These hospitals can hire expatriate professionals, but at least half of their staff must be from mainland China. The initiative is seen as a step towards a dual medical system, with public hospitals providing basic care and foreign-owned hospitals offering high-end services.
Industry leaders like Jiahui Health and Parkway Shanghai welcome the move and see it as an opportunity for growth and innovation. This initiative aligns with national efforts to open up the healthcare sector and improve access to quality medical care.
