Five years after their landmark donation of 100 million yuan (approximately $13.64 million) to Fudan University and their symbolic choice to take the subway to campus, alumni Chen Xiaoming and He Peixin revisited their former school last Friday. During this visit, they were presented with an impressive collection of 590 gratitude letters, collectively amounting to 400,000 words, from students who benefited from their generosity.
Chen and He, who hail from the less affluent regions of Guizhou and Jilin provinces, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Fudan University for the opportunities it provided them. They reflected on how the university paved the way for their postgraduate studies and international education, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring that more children from similar disadvantaged backgrounds have access to quality education. With their substantial donation made in December 2019, they established a fund dedicated to supporting students facing financial hardships.

This is just a distraction from the real issues. We need systemic change, not individual acts of charity.

400,000 words of gratitude? Sounds more like pressure to me. Now these students feel obligated to them.

This is what true leadership looks like. They are using their success to help others succeed.
