No Unusual Outbreak Patterns Reported
The World Health Organization (WHO) and Chinese health authorities have reported that the number of respiratory infections in China, including cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), is within the expected range for winter. There have been no unusual outbreak patterns reported, and the overall level of infections is lower than the previous winter.
The WHO's statement comes in response to heightened international interest over increasing respiratory infections in China, particularly cases of HMPV. The organization confirmed that Chinese authorities have reported no overwhelmed healthcare systems and lower hospital utilization compared to last winter.
HMPV is a common respiratory virus that spreads year-round but is more prevalent in late winter and early spring. While it usually causes mild symptoms, the elderly, children, and individuals with weakened immunity or chronic respiratory illnesses are at risk of developing severe cases.
Data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) shows that the proportion of HMPV infections among all cases testing positive for acute respiratory pathogens has been rising, from 4.8% at the beginning of December to 6.2% earlier this month. However, the positivity rate of HMPV infections has plateaued since December 30th and is increasing at a slower pace compared to previous weeks.
Flu cases are expected to start declining later this month, according to the China CDC. The organization's head of the National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, Kan Biao, stated that the scale and intensity of respiratory illnesses are lower than last season.
Li Tongzeng, a physician at Capital Medical University's Beijing You'an Hospital's infectious disease department, attributed the rise in reported HMPV infections to improved testing technologies. China has established a comprehensive surveillance network for acute respiratory illnesses, bolstered by information submitted by sentinel hospitals that test and monitor different pathogens.
The WHO also acknowledged China's surveillance system covering various respiratory pathogens and the publication of detailed weekly reports on the China CDC website.

HMPV is common, but the authorities should still be doing more testing and contact tracing. 🤦♀️

The WHO needs to stop downplaying the seriousness of this situation. We need to be prepared for the worst. 😠

The rise in HMPV cases is concerning, especially for vulnerable groups. Why aren't they mentioning any specific prevention measures? 😠

It's good to know the situation isn't as bad as last winter, but why isn't the WHO doing more to help? 🤔
